Living in America during Donald Trump's presidency has been a whirlwind. For some, it sparked feelings of pride; for others, it left a lingering sense of shame. This post I am expressing reasons why many Americans felt embarrassed during his time in office.

1. The Constant Controversies

Trump's presidency was marked by a barrage of controversies that often made headline news. For instance, his comments about the Charlottesville incident in 2017 drew widespread backlash. These events often overshadowed significant discussions on issues like healthcare and education. He represents everything divisive and hateful, why do we have to listen to him speak weekly?

2. The Divisive Rhetoric

Trump's language frequently polarized the nation. By labeling groups like immigrants and the press as "bad" or "fake," he created a climate of hostility. No one who isnt rich or wealthy can do what they need to for themselves or their families. Families have been ripped apart, so many people have lost jobs. Americans have left the country and gave up hope.

3. The Handling of Climate Change

Trump's approach to climate change was troubling for many. By withdrawing from the Paris Agreement in 2017, he turned his back on global efforts to combat climate change. Why would he fire people we have in place to warn us of terrrible storms and weather? So many people could be warned, losing homes and familes could have been prevented. When there is a selfish leader in office and narrow minded thinker who hires all his ill- equiped friends what di d we think would happen?

4. The Immigration Policy

Trump's strict immigration policies left many Americans feeling ashamed. Family separations at the border and the travel ban on predominantly Muslim countries sparked outrage and protests nationwide. According to a Gallup poll, 83% of Americans felt these actions contradicted the values of liberty and justice that the U.S. stands for. This tarnished America's image as a land of opportunity for those seeking refuge.

5. The Response to Racial Injustice

The resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement during Trump's presidency highlighted racial divisions. Why is he in Wasington D.C with military and targeting brown and Black teenagers? After the murder of George Floyd in 2020, protests erupted, and Trump's response was often seen as dismissive. All he does is throw gasoline on the minds of racisist.

6. The COVID-19 Pandemic Response

The COVID-19 pandemic response was a significant embarrassment. Trump downplayed the virus initially, leading to confusion and misinformation. A study conducted by the Covid States Project found that 70% of Americans disapproved of the federal response, especially as countries like New Zealand successfully controlled the virus with swift policies. Many Americans felt shame watching their government struggle while other nations succeeded.

7. The International Relations Fiascos

Trump's unpredictable approach to foreign policy left many feeling uneasy. His seemingly casual meetings with Kim Jong-un and aggressive comments toward NATO allies caused a stir. A 2020 survey revealed that 58% of Americans viewed Trump's foreign policy as damaging to the U.S.'s standing in the world, leading to concerns about global leadership.

8. The Attack on the Free Press

Trump's attacks on the media raised serious concerns about freedom of speech. By labeling news outlets as "fake," he undermined public trust. A survey by the Knight Foundation found that 71% of Americans were worried about the president's comments on the press, fearing it could lead to increased misinformation. Many felt embarrassed that their leader dismissed a crucial pillar of democracy.

9. The Focus on Personal Gain

Numerous allegations of conflicts of interest plagued Trump's presidency. Questions arose regarding his business dealings and the use of his position for personal benefit. All his maneueveringhas become so yuck and full of audacity. A 2019 poll from Ipsos showed that 71% of respondents believed these actions undermined ethical standards in government. This transparency issue led to concerns about the integrity of the presidency.

10. The Erosion of Democratic Norms

Throughout his presidency, the norms of democracy faced significant challenges. Trump's questioning of the electoral process and refusal to accept results after the 2020 election alarmed many. Changing numbers in different states so he can bend the truth of what the people want should be illegal. Trump is trying to make America a second " Russia"; we do not want a dictatorship. For many, this erosion of trust in the political system was a major source of embarrassment.

Moving Forward with Hope

Experiencing America under Trump's leadership has been complex, filled with both pride and embarrassment. The challenges listed here reflect deep concerns about our national values. As we move forward, it's crucial to acknowledge these moments and strive for a future grounded in unity, respect, and integrity. Only then can Americans find renewed pride in their country and its leadership.
